Kalimba FAQ

A.  Can I play kalimba since I dont have any musical background?
  • Kalimba is relatively easy to learn as it does not require any special techniques or musical background. Our music sheet is in numbering notes, which is very easy to follow.

B.  What is the difference between each series?
  • They are mainly different in material, which affects the sound quality. A series kalimba is made of American black walnut, which is all solid wood with rich sound. B series kalimba uses wood with straight grain patterns for a natural sound. The C series is made of acrylic, with relatively harder keys, suitable for kids.

C.  What is the difference between box-type (with holes, hollow) and without holes (solid) ?

  • Box-type with holes is loud and resonant, while the solid (without holes) has a softer, ethereal sound but with smaller volume.

D.  About tuning

  • Due to shipping, kalimba may need tuning upon received. If the note is low, use the tuning hammer to tap the tine from bottom to top. If it is too high, tap from top to bottom. Download a tuning app and adjust to the proper notes. Contact customer services for details.

E.  How about maintainence?

F.  How do we use pickup?

  • A pickup connects to the kalimba and amplify the sound to make it louder. Stick it and connect the other end to a speaker or headphones. If the connection don't match, then you may need an adapter.
